A raw breeze off the Flores Sea lifts the salt from the prow as the private boat eases out of Labuan Bajo harbor at first light. By midmorning the water opens to bright turquoise; Kelor and Manjerite flash coral shelves below the surface while the silhouette of Rinca grows larger on the horizon. On Padar, hikers climb a short but steep ridge to a panoramic saddle where three bays fall away like pages in a traveler's atlas.
