The sun leans low over the Gulf of Thailand as the vintage wooden boat slips from Mae Haad pier, the deck warm underfoot and salty wind rubbing at your face. Guests spread out on the sun deck while the captain eases toward Koh Nang Yuan — a string of three islets joined by a white sand spit that seems to hum with reef life. Throughout the day the sea teases and then gives: glassy shallows at Mango Bay, a scatter of reef fish in Hin Wong, and the Japanese Gardens where coral gardens crouch below a foot of water.

Koh Tao and nearby islets historically supported small fishing communities and grew into international dive hubs in the late 20th century as tourism and dive training expanded.
The area relies on healthy reefs for tourism; operators encourage reef‑safe sunscreen, no touching of coral, and limiting single‑use plastics to reduce impact.
