The coach eases out of Yulara before dawn and the desert stretches, flat and patient, toward the ragged rim of Kings Canyon. By the time the light picks out the canyon’s red walls, walkers are already ascending the initial ridge; the sandstone cliffs seem to wake and push air into the valley below.
