The red boat eases away from Ross Castle, the low hills of Killarney folding inward as the Lakes of Killarney narrow. Water slips past boat hulls and peat-smelled air carries the promise of the Gap of Dunloe — a glacial cleft of steep rocky walls and green ridgelines. After about 90 minutes on the lake you step ashore at Lord Brandon’s Cottage and choose your pace: walk the stony lane, or cycle the 7-mile (≈11 km) length of the Gap to Kate Kearney’s Cottage with the Black Valley opening like a page behind you.
