The dawn on day one in Arusha feels ordinary until the van turns off the paved road and the forest swallows the world. Rain beads on the window, then the clouds lift and Kilimanjaro’s ridged crown emerges—white, remote, uncompromising. On the Machame Route you start in closed-canopy forest, move through heath and moorland, cross alpine desert and finally pick your way over compacted scree to the Roof of Africa at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

You should have regular cardio training and experience with long hikes; stamina for 6–8 hour days and stair-climbing with a pack will greatly increase your chances of summit success.
