Comfortable swimming ability and basic snorkeling fitness; should be able to climb in and out of a small boat and manage short swims in open ocean.
A half‑day boat trip from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno brings you to Kicker Rock’s towering lava walls for two snorkel stops among sea turtles, Galápagos sharks and nesting boobies. The tour pairs dramatic underwater channels with a quiet beach finish—perfect for swimmers comfortable in open water.
You push off from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno just after sunrise and the Pacific pulls the boat into open water, the island shrinking behind you. Two vertical lava towers rise from the sea ahead—Kicker Rock (León Dormido)—black spires scored by waves and topped with nesting seabirds. The guide cuts the engine and the boat becomes a quiet island of humans surrounded by birds that keep watch like weathered sentries. You slip into warm water and the channel between the towers opens below you: a 60‑foot trench that funnels current and life.

The Kicker Rock channel channels strong currents—only enter when your guide says it’s safe and use a flotation vest if you’re not a strong swimmer.
Sunscreen that’s free of oxybenzone and octinoxate helps protect the marine reserve—apply before boarding and reapply after swims.
From June–November the Humboldt Current cools the water; a 3mm wetsuit improves comfort and core warmth.
Use a secure dry bag or waterproof housing—the boat bounces and spray is constant, especially during navigation sections.
Kicker Rock is an erosional remnant of volcanic activity; sailors named it long before naturalists recorded its unique bird colonies and marine life.
The site lies inside the Galápagos Marine Reserve—visitors must follow strict no‑touch rules and use reef‑safe products to limit impact.
Rental gear is provided but a familiar mask reduces fog and improves comfort.
Useful during June–November when the water cools and currents increase.
