You step off the vehicle and the highland wind greets you like a blunt question: can you keep up? The landscape answers in color—orange and rust rhyolite slopes rising from steaming vents, thin plumes of steam slipping between black lava ribs, and distant white shoulders of Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers pressing the horizon.

The guided loop covers about 14 km with mixed easy and demanding sections; it’s best for hikers with previous experience and good fitness.
No technical climbing skills are required, but experience on uneven volcanic terrain is recommended; crampons may be advised in shoulder seasons.
There are no public services in the highlands; use facilities at BaseCamp or en route before the trek and bring everything you need for the day.
