You step off the jeep into a steam-laced bowl of color: ochre ridges, black lava scars and sulfur-streaked snow patches frame a valley that seems to breathe. Kerlingarfjöll’s Hveradalir valley challenges the senses with hissing fumaroles, bubbling mud pools and the mineral tang of hot springs — the highlands making themselves known in sound and scent.

Most tours run about 2–3 hours each way by 4x4 or jeep over paved roads and highland F-roads, making the full experience a long day.
Short sections are family-friendly, but long travel times and geothermal hazards mean check the operator’s age policy and supervise children near hot springs.
Many tours offer optional entry to the Highland Baths; bring swimwear and confirm admission cost and booking when you reserve.
F-roads and highland access are generally open in summer (June–September); outside that window, access is limited and tours may be canceled.
