A pre-dawn drive from Bishkek loosens the city’s edge as the road climbs into the Kyrgyz Ala-Too. By mid-morning the gorge opens: a ribbon of water daring you to follow it uphill, forests of larch and birch shading the trail, and the air thinning as you gain ground. The final approach unfolds in meadows that slope toward a turquoise bowl — Kol-Tor Lake — fed by thaw and glacial seepage.
