Rockhounds will find plenty of opportunities for rock collecting and gold panning in Colorado. Precious gems, semi-precious gems and various metals can be found throughout the state. In particular, many streams on the Front Range wash gold dust and occasional gold nuggets down from rugged glacier-carved slopes.

The best way to learn about panning for gold is to observe the techniques of our experienced panners. You learn techniques to wash the lighter, less valuable material away and get the heavy gold particles to settle to the bottom of your pan by working with the material.

Adventure Tips
Wear waterproof footwear
You’ll be working with water and sediment, so sturdy shoes or boots that can get wet and muddy are best.
Bring sunscreen and a hat
Central City’s elevation and open panning area can expose you to strong sun; protect your skin during summer trips.
Follow instructor guidance carefully
Proper panning technique preserves the ore and increases your chance of finding gold flakes to keep.
Keep an eye out for wildlife
