You step into a narrow window of northern Georgia where the Georgian Military Highway carves itself through rock and wind. Vehicles climb out of Tbilisi’s humid valley and, within two hours, the valley opens to high pastures, the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument looming like a concrete lookout over Devil’s Valley.
moderate.
8–9 hours.
Suitable for travelers with general fitness; able to handle short uphill walks (20–60 minutes) at altitude.
The tour lasts about 9 hours; it typically includes guided transportation, stops at Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri, Gudauri, the Friendship Monument and Stepantsminda, plus a honey tasting and free time—dinner and the optional 4WD to Gergeti are extra.
No formal acclimatization is required for this day tour, but moderate fitness helps for short uphill walks and coping with colder temperatures at elevation.
Access to the church is commonly by short hike or optional 4WD vehicle; private vehicles can reach the lower road but the final section is rough and often requires a higher-clearance vehicle.
Bring layered clothing, a windproof jacket, hat, sunscreen, and water—mountain weather changes fast and temperatures at 2,000+ m are significantly cooler than Tbilisi.
The route follows the Georgian Military Highway, a historic corridor connecting the South Caucasus with the north; Ananuri and Gergeti served as defensive and religious refuges during centuries of regional conflict.
Travelers are encouraged to stick to established roads and trails, avoid littering in fragile alpine meadows, and support local vendors to sustain rural communities.
