City maintenance barges and the Go Rio river taxi may be present on the river. If they are you MUST move to the side of the river (against the concrete walls of the river) and allow them to pass. This is for your safety... kayaks are hard to see and the barges are NOT easily maneuvered. So the right-of-way aways goes to the barges.
You must wear a lifejacket (PFD) at all times and it must be securely buckled the entire time you are in the kayak. The use of a life lifejacket (PFD) is included in the rental price. If you have your own coastguard approved lifejacket (PFD) feel free to bring it and use it. The river police will ticket you and escort you back to the dock if you do not have your lifejacket (PFD) on and buckled. Tickets are expensive!!
