You step onto the white company van in front of Lisbon Zoo and the city slips behind you as the Ponte 25 de Abril hovers above the Tagus like a rust-red gate. By the time the sea appears again, the limestone ribs of Serra da Arrábida rise from the water—sheer cliffs, cork oak slopes and narrow coves. At Praia do Creiro the salt smells sharp; the guide rigs dry bags and wetsuits and the group pushes off into water that alternates between glassy turquoise and deep blue.
