Adventure tips

Dress for sacred sitesCover shoulders and knees for entry into temples; carry a scarf for quick coverage—some sites deny entry for inappropriate dress.

Bring small cashHave small denominations for donations, entrance fees, and tea stalls—many vendors don’t accept cards.

Mind the cremation ghatsAt Pashupatinath, stay on designated paths, follow your guide, and avoid photographing funerary rites without permission.

Prepare for stairs and uneven groundMany sites have steep stone steps and uneven courtyards—wear sturdy, easy-to-remove shoes.

Recommended gear

Sturdy walking shoes: Support and grip for temple stairs and uneven courtyards; easy to remove for shrine entry.
Light daypack: Carries water, sunscreen, camera, and a small scarf for temple coverage.
Sun protection (hat & sunscreen): Kathmandu sun can be strong between late morning and mid-afternoon, especially on elevated viewpoints.
Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is important; guides typically provide bottled water but refilling reduces waste.
