A cold wind from the high plateau meets you as the minibus leaves Kashgar before dawn. Road cuts across scrub and salt flats, then climbs toward white sand at Baisha Lake and the hard, blue mirror of Karakul at 3,600 m, where Muztagh Ata and the Kongur peaks stare back. On the first evening the town of Tashkorgan centers the trip — a compact cluster of stone houses and the ancient stone fort that gives the town its name.
moderate.
2 days (approx. 48 hours); daily drives 8–10 hours.
Moderate fitness recommended — able to handle several hours of driving and short walks at high altitude
Karakul sits around 3,600 m; many visitors notice mild symptoms (headache, breathlessness). Move slowly, hydrate, and avoid heavy exertion the first day.
The road has more than 600 S-turns but is a paved, maintained route; choose a private tour with an experienced driver if you prefer slower, safer driving.
Mandarin and local Turkic and Tajik languages are common; Chinese yuan (CNY) is the standard currency—cash is useful in villages.
The tour includes one standard double room at a listed 4-star hotel in Tashkorgan and two lunches; confirm single-room or dietary needs when booking.
Tashkorgan sits on an ancient Silk Road corridor; its stone fort marks centuries of caravan traffic between Central and South Asia.
This high plateau has fragile alpine meadows and sparse water resources—stick to established routes, avoid disturbing grazing livestock, and pack out waste.
