The bus eases out of Kandy before dawn, headlights cutting a ribbon through tea slopes as the city recedes. By midmorning the road opens onto a different Sri Lanka: flat plains, scattered paddy, and a lone rock rising from the scrub like a deliberate relic. Sigiriya’s plateau—660 feet of bare stone with terraces and masonry clinging to its flanks—dominates the view, daring visitors to climb a thousand-plus steps for the perspective that once belonged to kings.
