Summer Camp - Junior Explorers - North Park takes place in North Park, a large Allegheny County park surrounding North Park Lake in Allison Park, Pennsylvania. Meet at the North Park Boathouse, 10301 Pearce Mill Rd, Allison Park, PA 15101. Operated by Venture Outdoors, this day camp for kindergarten through second grade converts trails, shoreline, and oak-dominated woodlands into a safe, curiosity-driven playground.
Each day blends short hikes, family-style biking loops, and geocaching hunts that turn contour lines on a map into small victories. Campers learn basic angling with specially designed hooks that minimize risk, try simple hands-on STEM experiments, and build social skills through guided team games. The landscape is approachable—rolling hills around a reservoir, mixed hardwood stands, and a grassy lakeside that offers both shaded routes and open shoreline for casting and nature study.
Staff prioritize safety and autonomy: activities are scaled for young bodies, and instructors carry first-aid supplies and clear shelter plans for storms. Bathrooms are usually available but may include porta-potties; Venture Outdoors flags this honestly up front. The camp keeps gadget use to a minimum—cell phones and handheld electronics are stored during programming to keep focus on outdoor play and group dynamics.
Practicalities matter here. Pack a day pack with lunch, snacks, a water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, an extra set of clothes and shoes, a raincoat, any medications, and optional sun hat or sunglasses. Venture Outdoors supplies extra snacks and water, and staff adjust schedules in damp weather, swapping paddling sessions or creek explorations for covered STEM projects or team-building games when needed.
What makes this program stand out is its age-appropriate progression: skills are introduced in short, repeatable segments so kids practice knot-tying, trail safety, and map-reading without fatigue. The setting—public parkland ringed by an accessible road network—makes drop-off straightforward, while the boathouse gives a clear, safe meeting point. Venture Outdoors also makes financial assistance available; contact [email protected] or 412-255-0564 for campership details.
Families who want a first outdoor-camp taste for little ones will find this program both adventurous and manageable: it balances active time on trails and shoreline with quiet exploration and hands-on learning. Between geocaches tucked under old stone walls, quick fishing lessons on the lake edge, and STEM activities that make natural science tactile, Junior Explorers at North Park gives young kids a real outdoor week to remember.
Beyond skills, the camp cultivates curiosity and resilience: small successes—reading a map symbol, retying a knot, or landing a tiny fish—build confidence that carries home. Parents appreciate daily pick-up at a single, visible location and the program’s transparency about weather and potty logistics. For community-minded families looking to plant roots in outdoor recreation, Junior Explorers is an accessible, well-run entry point.
easy.
Full day (approx. 8–9 hours per day).
Suitable for children who can walk up to 1–2 miles across varied terrain and tolerate extended periods of outdoor play.
Camp is not typically canceled for inclement weather. Staff will alter the schedule and use shelter plans; activities may move to covered areas and indoor games or STEM projects if needed.
Campers are asked to keep phones and handheld electronics in their backpacks during camp. Continued use after a warning will result in staff holding the device until pick-up.
After registration parents receive a Camper Wellbeing Packet. Venture Outdoors will consider accommodations that do not change the nature of activities; allow at least two weeks’ notice.
There is no aftercare this year; pick-up is expected by the published end time to avoid late fees.
Early or late arrivals may be accommodated depending on the day’s activities; contact staff in advance. Late pick-up incurs a $1.00 per minute fee beginning at 4:01pm.
Camperships may be available; complete the application on the Venture Outdoors website. Contact [email protected] or 412-255-0564 for questions.
North Park is part of the Allegheny County parks system and has long served as a local recreation resource connecting neighborhoods to lake and forested trails.
