History

Jozani grew from local and international conservation efforts that reversed a late-20th-century decline in red colobus numbers and established the area as a protected coastal forest.

Adventure tips

Go earlyAnimals are most active in the morning; cooler, drier conditions also make trails easier to navigate.

Wear closed shoesTrails can be muddy and uneven—sturdy shoes reduce slip risk and protect from roots.

Bring insect repellentMosquitos and biting flies are common near mangroves and shaded trails—DEET or picaridin works well.

Respect the wildlifeKeep distance from monkeys, avoid feeding them, and follow your guide’s directions to limit disturbance.

Recommended gear

Sturdy trail shoes: Closed, grippy shoes handle mud, roots, and uneven boardwalks.
Insect repellent: Protects against mosquitos common near mangroves and shaded forest.
Binoculars: Small optics help you observe monkeys and birdlife without getting too close.
Light rain jacket: A compact shell is useful during Zanzibar’s brief rain periods and humid mornings.
