You step out of the van where rough goat tracks meet broken masonry and the air tastes faintly of pine and dust. The ruined serrated ridgeline of Jiankou rises like an unfinished spine, daring you to climb; below, valleys push clouds through the gaps and the distant tiled terraces of Mutianyu catch the sun.

It’s challenging—beginners with good fitness can do it if comfortable with scrambling and uneven terrain, but expect long hours and exposed sections.
