Dust rises on the two-lane that skirts the Verde River as the van climbs toward Tuzigoot’s low stone walls. You step out onto sun-warmed sandstone and look down at the river’s crooked bend—the Sinagua builders chose this point for both water and visibility. The rooms here are quiet, carved from the same limestone the desert erodes into dunes and cliffs.

Tuzigoot was a multi-room Sinagua pueblo occupied from roughly 1100–1400 CE; Jerome rose in the late 19th century as a copper mining boomtown and later reinvented itself as an artist community.
Tuzigoot is managed as a National Monument—stay on marked paths to protect fragile masonry and soils; Jerome balances tourism with preservation of historic structures, so follow local guidelines and support small businesses.
