You begin the day with the air of the Trans-Ili Alatau pressing cool and bright against your face as the road climbs east of Almaty toward Issyk Lake. The first stop frames a high-country basin—crisp water, stony shore, and a line of peaks that keep watch—where guides lay out the lake’s human story: Saka-era burials and later 20th-century changes that reshaped the shore.

The trail to Ayusai is a short forest hike—plan for 1–2 km each way depending on the exact approach, taking 30–60 minutes on variable terrain.
Families can join, but participants should be comfortable with short hikes and uneven footing; those with serious back or heart conditions are advised not to participate.
Bring respectful clothing, a camera, and patience for short walks—do not touch or climb on petroglyphs or burial mounds.
Parts are accessible in winter but snow can make trails slippery and roads more difficult; operators may modify the itinerary or cancel in poor conditions.
