The coach pulls away from Buchanan Bus Station under a low, iron sky and soon the city’s red sandstone gives way to the ancient grammar of the Highlands: bog, loch, and serrated ridge. By mid-afternoon you are driving across Rannoch Moor, where peat blackens the ground and the horizon seems to recite a different geologic clock—rock older than the nations that now argue over it. The road climbs; Glencoe opens like a cold theater, its cliffs holding stories of clan feuds and the 1692 massacre that still shapes local memory. Night one drops you in Portree, a harbor bright with painted houses and the patient hush of island time.
