Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the world's fastest growing sports and it originated in Polynesia as a predecessor to regular surfing. It became popular with the Waikiki beach boys in Hawaii as it allowed them to watch over their surf pupils, to see waves approaching from a higher vantage point, and to keep their customers' cameras dry.
However, it is now increasingly popular as an alternative to surfing. Laird Hamilton, legendary big wave surfer and waterman, uses it for cross-training and fitness to allow him to tackle huge waves. Many Hollywood types use it to make them look fit and pretty. We can't claim to use it for either of these reasons but just find it a fun alternative to surfing! SUP improves core fitness and works almost every muscle in your body - the burn becomes apparent quickly on choppy water!
SUP is accessible to almost everyone as you can take it more sedately if the above doesn't appeal. SUP boards offer a stable platform and comfortable paddling position to glide quickly over the water...once balancing is mastered! Standing up means you can see marine life down through the water. If you want to progress beyond flat water, SUP also makes catching waves easier compare to surfing and you are able to ride much smaller waves.
SUP lessons are offered to adults and kids aged 8 and above subject to weather conditions. Under 12's must have a parent or legal guardian accompany them on the activity. Under 18's must have a parent or legal guardian observing the activity. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres unaided. Lessons are 2 hours, unless stated otherwise. Maximum group size of 6 for flat water SUP and tours and maximum of 2 for SUP surf lessons. Discount of 10% for bookings of 6 people or more and 20% discount for bookings of 10 people or more although the groups will have to be split into manageable sizes.
