The boat slips away from the low-lying shore and the reef steps forward in blues so clear they look lit from within. You meet your SSI instructor on deck, sign a quick medical form and practice ear equalization while the skipper idles above a fringing reef. The first descent is reassuringly shallow — instructors stay close, guide your buoyancy and, if needed, lend a hand as you take your first breathing breaths underwater.
