Into Iceland’s Volcanic Heart: Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls Trek Guide

Iceland’s Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls Trek is a wild spine of south Iceland that links the rhyolite slopes of Landmannalaugar to the glacier-guarded valley of Þórsmörk, with the volcanic saddle of Fimmvörðuháls bridging the two. This guided route runs through lava fields, black sand deserts, steamy hot springs, and abrupt canyons, offering a compressed tour of Iceland’s volcanic geology and fragile tundra. Meeting in Reykjavik, this itinerary is run by International Mountain Climbing School with experienced guides; group size is capped at 10 and minimum age is 18, making it an intimate way to move through raw terrain. Step out of the bus at Landmannalaugar and the color of the hills—pale pink, gold, and green rhyolite—arrives before the trail does. Early sections wind across scoria slopes and mossed-over lava, where geothermal vents hiss at the edges of pools and the scent of mineral-rich steam hangs in the air. As the trail moves south the landscape opens into black sand plains and braided rivers carved through ash and volcanic sediment. Fimmvörðuháls itself is a steep knife of volcanic rock between the ice caps Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull: pumice, fresh lava flows and the occasional steam vent make the pass feel newly made. Photographers will prize the sharp contrasts—rhyolite bands against steel skies, waterfalls tumbling into green gullies, and glacier domes in the distance. Botanically, the route reveals Arctic willow and resilient moss carpets that recolonize cooled lava, while birds such as golden plover and meadow pipit animate the open moor. Why book through this operator? International Mountain Climbing School brings guide expertise accustomed to demanding mountain environments, and the small-group format allows for flexible pacing that respects acclimatization and photography stops. Logistics begin in Reykjavik, with transport into the highlands and well-planned camp or hut nights depending on the season. Practical notes: weather changes fast—expect wind, rain and sun in a single day—and river crossings after spring melt can be demanding. The trail rewards effort with striking geology, clean hot springs where you can soak post-hike, and the rare sense of moving through terrain shaped in living time by fire and ice. For travelers who want a concentrated, high-contrast encounter with Iceland’s volcanic heart, the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls route remains unmatched. Lead guide Craig John, listed with the operator International Mountain Climbing School, brings a depth of expedition experience—his résumé includes dozens of high-altitude climbs and long multi-day traverses—which translates into clear pre-departure briefings, practiced river-crossing instruction, conservative weather decision-making, and a pragmatic approach to low-impact camping. The result is an itinerary that invites photographers and serious hikers alike to take risks worth taking: extended vistas, the geological theater of fire meeting ice, delivered with careful logistics and reliability.
