Intermediate Pottery Wheel-Throwing Course in Weston, Canberra — 4-Week Studio Classes

On the western flank of Canberra’s suburban sprawl, Deep Blue Ceramics runs an intermediate wheel-throwing course at 5 Souter Place, Weston, ACT 2611. Over four weekly sessions led by Amy, this course is designed for potters who can reliably centre clay and throw basic cylinders but want to push technique and creativity. Each week focuses on a clear skill: cylinders, plates, experimenting with different clay sizes, and a final session for individual projects where you bring a personal idea to the wheel. The studio feels like a working lab of purpose-built wheels, tool benches, open shelving for drying pieces and a splash sink where hands are scrubbed clean between pulls. Class size is capped at ten, which keeps the atmosphere collaborative and ensures Amy can give one-on-one adjustments to posture, hand position and trimming. Use of a wheel and basic tools is included and an apron is provided; firing, glazing and clay are charged separately, though the studio stocks a small range of clays if you don’t bring your own. Practically, you’ll refine centring under resistance, refine even wall thickness, learn plate-throwing fundamentals and scale your thinking to different ball sizes of clay. This course is unusually focused on problem-solving at the wheel: how to rescue a collapsing cylinder, how to flatten a lip cleanly for a plate, how to trim efficiently so pieces stack in the kiln. Those are the real, useful skills that accelerate a potter’s progress. Why book this in Weston? Deep Blue Ceramic’s program is compact and repeatable: four weeks of targeted repetition rather than a one-off workshop. That structure suits busy travelers or locals who want measurable improvement without committing to a semester. The address places you in Weston, a quiet pocket of Canberra close to local cafes and supply shops, making it easy to pick up tools or clay between sessions. Expect hands-on coaching, a practical studio setup and clear instruction tailored to intermediate needs. Bring a towel, wear clothes you can get dirty and be ready to leave the session with several trimmed pieces destined for glazing. Whether you’re aiming for functional dinnerware or exploratory forms, Amy’s course gives the technical sharpening and creative runway to take your wheel work to the next level.
