You step out of the van and the air feels different — thinner, cooler, edged with pine. The road has climbed out of Denver and now the landscape opens: granite ribs, wind-swept talus, and lakes that reflect the high sky. The guide hands you a steaming cup of “mountain” hot chocolate as Echo Lake mirrors the craggy outline of the peaks.
