Inside the ACA SW Recreational Canyoning Course with Rick Green on Cline River

Port Alice - ACA SW Recreational Course with Rick Green is a focused, four-day, 22-hour canyoning certification and skills workshop that runs in the river canyons near Cline River, Alberta, Canada. Taught by certified instructors and billed as an ACA SW Recreational Course, the program is aimed at hikers, climbers, paddlers, and anyone who wants to move through slot and river canyons with competence and care. The course meets at Telegraph Cove and runs with small groups (4–8), combining classroom modules, rope work on anchored drops, and real-world canyon travel.

The canyon environment here is raw: steep-walled chutes, polished bedrock, and tight slots cut by seasonal flows. Participants will practice single- and double-rope techniques, anchored descents, friction management, rope retrieval, and low-angle rescue scenarios while negotiating waterfalls, plunge pools, and narrow passages. Weather-driven water levels and cold alpine-fed creeks make timing and technique essential; instructors emphasize hazard recognition, safe anchor building, and minimizing erosion and vegetation damage.

This program stands out in the region for its emphasis on skill progression and conservative safety practices. Rick Green and his team focus on practical drills that translate immediately to remote routes. A mix of hands-on exercises and group problem solving ensures students graduate with usable competence and the judgment to choose appropriate lines. The course fee is listed at $835 + Tax per person; participants should read prerequisites in advance and arrive with basic fitness and a willingness to carry technical gear.

Logistics are lean and mountain-focused: expect multi-pitch-style rope work in canyon settings, wet rappels, and sections that require careful route-finding. Gear lists and pre-trip briefings are provided by the operator; bring a solid layering system, durable wet-suit or neoprene, canyon boots or sticky-soled shoes, and a personal harness that fits the course requirements. Wilderness first aid and weather contingency planning are core parts of the curriculum.

For travelers in Alberta seeking a concentrated, skills-first canyoning course, this offering blends disciplined instruction with direct exposure to the rugged canyon landscapes that define the region. Whether you intend to guide, instruct, or simply push your personal boundaries, the Port Alice - ACA SW Recreational Course with Rick Green delivers a methodical curriculum, small-group coaching, and a route through some of the province’s most technical river canyons. Participants should have basic rope familiarity and intermediate wilderness fitness before enrolling; the course accelerates technical learning and expects students to carry 20–30 pound packs over uneven terrain. Local transport options vary; confirm meeting logistics at Telegraph Cove and plan for variable cell coverage. Leave no trace practices are enforced to protect bank vegetation and fish habitat. Completion provides a practical credential and real exposure to complex canyon travel that few courses match in western Canada. Register.
