Designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the Grüne Zitadelle was completed in 2005 after Hundertwasser’s death in 2000, and remains one of his most prominent urban projects in Germany.
The rooftop plantings reduce heat and add biodiversity; visitors are asked to stay on paths and avoid trampling beds to protect the green roof.
