Dawn in the high Andes is thin and bright; you’re bundled into a van that climbs to Abra Malaga, where wind and sun test your layers and the mountain seems to dare you forward. Strapped into a full-suspension bike, you descend through clouds and eucalyptus, the trail carving steep switchbacks before spilling into warmer, jungle air. River noise grows louder each day until the final walk along the rails toward Aguas Calientes, and at sunrise the ruins of Machu Picchu reveal themselves, patient and vast.
