Improv 304 Advanced Ensemble & Performance Style — Ann Arbor Pro-Level Improv Intensive

Improv 304: Advanced Ensemble & Performance Style is an eight-week professional-level improv intensive in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Designed as the capstone of Hear.Say core training, the course functions less like a classroom and more like a working theater company rehearsal room. Over two-and-a-half-hour weekly sessions, a focused cohort synthesizes advanced scene mechanics, game theory, and structural editing to build a signature ensemble show and deliver a headline performance on a mainstage under real lights. The room itself is the trip's central feature: a black-box rehearsal space that becomes a laboratory for timing, blocking, and stage pictures. Key elements you'll work with are pacing and internal show rhythm, vocal projection and audience management, and the mechanics of self-directed sets from within an ensemble. The curriculum maps clearly across eight weeks—assessing ensemble chemistry, tightening professional staging, mastering pacing, running dress rehearsals, then executing a final technical run and showcase—so students graduate with a market-ready show format and practical directing tools. What makes this program stand out in Ann Arbor is its emphasis on professional theater etiquette and ensemble autonomy. The city's active arts scene and steady student audiences create a fertile environment for testing risky choices and refining a consistent voice. The program includes performer perks—about $80 in mainstage tickets and backstage access throughout the term—that help bridge classroom work and public performance. Practical details are straightforward: participants must be at least 18 years old, and each session runs roughly 2–3 hours. Expect iterative homework: scene journaling, run-throughs, and notes from a senior director who provides hands-on, director-grade feedback. The rehearsal-to-show cadence culminates in a full technical check followed by your headline showcase, a true professional dress under lights. This intensive is ideal for improvisers ready to transition from student to company member: those who want to self-direct, audition for house teams, or produce indie shows. It's less about learning basic games and more about internal company craft—how to edit on the fly, hold stage pictures, and sustain a full-length set. If you're seeking a rigorous, performance-focused capstone in a midsize arts town with receptive audiences, Improv 304 offers a clear path from rehearsal room experiments to a polished, public headline set. Location details supplied list the city as Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States, though a precise meeting point is not provided in the listing; check the operator for the rehearsal address and theatre policy. Sessions are geared toward adults (18+) and typically capstone cohorts are intentionally small to preserve ensemble work—expect close director attention and an environment that rewards repeat attendance. Bring a notebook for scene notes and plan to watch mainstage shows during the term: seeing other performers is treated as part of the curriculum and accelerates your company's development.
