Ilha Deserta Beach and Sunset Sailing with Oyster: Private Catamaran in Ria Formosa

On Portugal’s southern shore, the Ilha Deserta Beach and Sunset Sailing with Oyster experience begins at Pier de Faro and unspools into a day of quiet islands, shallow lagoons and long Atlantic light. The trip pairs a private shuttle ride to Ilha Deserta — a sandbar island in the Ria Formosa barrier system — with an evening catamaran cruise through the park’s channels, offering swimming, lunch at Estaminé Restaurant, and a sunset service of fresh local oysters on deck. The scene is straightforward: wide white sand backed by dune grasses, mudflats and tidal channels that braid the lagoon, shorebirds quartering the shallows and, at dusk, a horizon that slides from gold to salmon as the boat cuts a calm wake. What makes this offering stand out is the combination of privacy and place. Group sizes top out at fourteen, so the island feels like yours for a few hours, and the catamaran navigates low, glassy water that highlights the Ria Formosa’s geological identity — a living barrier island system of sandbanks, salt marshes and braided channels shaped by tides and Atlantic swells. The operator intentionally keeps routes flexible: you can swim from the beach, walk the small dunes, or linger under a parasol before returning to Faro for the late-afternoon sail. Lunch is unstructured; Estaminé sits near the island’s landing and specialises in seafood, though meals are not included in the base price. On board, the pace softens. The crew serves oysters as the sun slides near the horizon, a concise local ritual that feels both luxurious and elemental: saline shellfish, cooled drinks, and the slow geometry of light on lagoon water. Wildlife punctuates the itinerary — common waders, Audouin’s gulls and, sometimes, glimpses of bottlenose dolphins further offshore — and the sparse vegetation on Ilha Deserta is dominated by dune grasses and salt-tolerant shrubs rather than dense forest. Practicalities are compact: meet at Pier de Faro, allow time for a short transfer and expect an eight hour window for the full combo. The trip suits couples, small groups celebrating special occasions, or anyone seeking a low-key but cinematic coastal day: beaches with few people, a protected waterway to glide through at sunset, and a final toast with oysters. The experience gives a direct, tactile way to read the Ria Formosa — its sands, channels and coastal life — while remaining accessible from Faro, Faro District, Portugal. Photographers will find clean horizons and graphic lines between sand and sea, while food-focused travelers appreciate the local shellfish and Estaminé’s regional menus; bring a light jacket for sea breezes after sunset, waterproof shoes for sandy landings, and leave extra time to stroll Faro’s marina before or after the excursion to round out the day and plan an easy evening.
