The trail opens under a slate-blue dawn as a convoy leaves Cusco, the city lights shrinking behind you and the Andes rising ahead. By the time the bus spills hikers into Mollepata, the air has thinned and the road climbs into a landscape of wind-sculpted puna and serrated peaks. The final walk from Soraypampa pushes past low shrubs and rocky switchbacks until a bright bowl of turquoise water appears at 4,200 m — Humantay Lake, fed by the glacier of the Humantay massif.
