At dawn the road out of Cusco narrows into a spine of light and dust; by midmorning the air thins and the peaks near Salkantay loom like slow-moving weather. The trail from Soraypampa climbs steadily for roughly 1.5 hours to Humantay Lagoon, arriving at about 4,200 m where the water reflects an alpine sky. The lagoon’s turquoise face seems to dare you to look away.

The trail is about 1.5 hours uphill for most visitors; total hiking time including return is roughly 3 hours depending on pace and rest stops.
No technical experience is required, but you should be acclimatized to altitudes above 3,000 m and able to sustain uphill walking for 1–2 hours.
Most include hotel pickup in central Cusco, round-trip transport to Soraypampa, a bilingual guide, breakfast, lunch, entrance fee, trekking poles, and basic first aid/oxygen supply.
