The trail opens with a long predawn drive out of Cusco, the windows fogging as Andean peaks pinprick the horizon. By Soraypampa (3,900 m) the valley unfurls—scree, puna grass and the first sharp breath of altitude—before the path tucks into a steep, switchbacked climb. Thirty to ninety minutes in, the lake reveals itself: a compact bowl of icy turquoise cradled against a serrated rim of snow and rock at roughly 4,200 m.
