The bus pulls out of Mexico City before dawn and the valley opens like a map under a thinning blue light. At the Teotihuacan landing field, crews bend to the billowing envelope; the balloon breathes and rises and the pyramids of the Sun and Moon begin to catch the first rays. From the basket, the plateau spreads—flat agricultural terraces, the avenue between monuments, and the distant ring of volcanic ridges that contain the valley.
