You leave the neon of Las Vegas before sunrise, the strip shrinking behind you as the highway unfurls toward a raw, sun-bleached landscape. The bus slides past Lake Mead’s broad surface, then lifts onto the Mike O'Callahan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge; the wind off the canyon seems to push you forward as you step onto the pedestrian tip for a sharp, exposed view of the dam and Colorado River far below.
