Fishing License Required

Hawai‘i has joined other ocean states in the country and now requires a license for recreational ocean fishing for non-Hawai‘i residents. The license is easy to get at the Department of Land and Natural Resources-Division of Aquatic Resources (DLNR-DAR) website. The cost is $20 for a 1-day license, $40 for a 7-day license, and $70 for an annual license. Adventure Tips

Bring Sun Protection

Wear waterproof sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to shield against Hawaii’s strong sun on open water.

Dress in Layers

Bring lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing with a light jacket for early mornings or windier conditions.

Stay Hydrated

Carry plenty of water, as daytime waters can be warm and dehydration sneaks up quickly.

Be Prepared for Seasickness

Take motion sickness medicine if you're prone; the boat can experience some movement in open water.
