Late afternoon light slices across limestone cliffs as the boat pushes off from the mangrove-lined shore; the water smells of salt and charcoal, and the islands ahead look like green islets rising out of glass. By day the Hong Islands reveal sheer karst walls, a narrow throat to the emerald Hong Lagoon, and sandbars that appear like white paint dropped on blue. By night, with a little luck, the sea begins to glow under your hands — bioluminescent plankton lighting up the wake like a handful of stars.
