The morning light breaks over chaparral and dry brush as hikers thread a dusty singletrack toward the white letters on Mount Lee. Wind pushes through the scrub, the city below opening like a map — freeways, palm-lined streets, and the distant Pacific daring you to look farther. The guide gathers the group at the Smokey the Bear sign, and the city’s scale becomes part of the walk: occasional airplane rumble, a far-off siren, and the steady rhythm of feet on trail.
