A low-slung bus pulls out of Cancun before dawn, headlights cutting through humidity as passengers fold into neck pillows and the promise of white sand. By midmorning the ferry slips away from the mainland and Holbox comes into view: a patchwork of low buildings, mangrove fringe and a wide, shallow lagoon that seems to hold the sky. At Punta Mosquito the sea flattens into a mirror — clouds and sun reflected across ankle-deep water — and for a few hours the island dares you to slow down.
