Situated just outside Charleston, South Carolina, Middleton Place stands as a vivid window into America’s colonial past and Southern plantation life. This historic estate features the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States, laid out over nearly 65 acres along the Ashley River. Middleton Place offers visitors a blend of natural beauty, deep history, and thoughtful preservation that makes it unique in the Lowcountry region.
The Batch Middleton Place Tour with Private Transportation by Chicora Tours grants travelers exclusive, comfortable access to this beloved landmark. The tour begins with a private ride from Charleston, whisking you through scenic coastal roads directly to the plantation’s grounds. On arrival, guests experience a semi-guided walk through the meticulously maintained gardens featuring azaleas, camellias, and centuries-old oaks draped with Spanish moss. These gardens were designed in the 18th century—an enduring reflection of period horticulture and landscape design.
The tour unfolds further at the Middleton House, a beautifully restored family home turned museum. Here, knowledgeable docents share compelling stories about the estate’s founders, the Middleton family, and the enslaved people whose labor shaped the plantation’s legacy. This deeply human narrative is balanced by exhibits showcasing 18th and 19th-century furnishings and artifacts.
A traditional Lowcountry lunch served during the tour highlights regional dishes like shrimp and grits and pecan pie, reinforcing Charleston’s rich culinary heritage.
