Historic Trades Family Day: Hands-On Craft Demos in Savannah

Historic Trades Family Day: Hands, Tools, and Rhythm on Savannah's Broughton Street Set in the heart of Savannah's historic district, Historic Trades Family Day invites visitors to step into the working past of the city with three hours of hands-on craft stations, demonstrations, music, and roaming artisans. Meeting at The Historic Kennedy Pharmacy at 323 E. Broughton Street, the event unfolds across museum grounds that transform a block of the city into a living workshop for families and curious adults. These grounds showcase key features: rows of open-air craft tents, demonstration benches for woodturning, tables for embroidery and historic printmaking, and a small performance area for period music. What makes this event unique is the emphasis on trades—the physical tools, the tactile materials, and the process. Visitors can watch a bowl take shape on a lathe during woodturning demos, press inked type onto paper in printmaking, and learn basic stitches at embroidery stations. Artisans explain techniques and the historic uses of tools, connecting city streets to the trades that built them. Savannah's coastal setting and live oaks aren't the focus here; instead the scene highlights cultural geology of craft—handmade objects, aged woods, and printed paper—that anchor local history. The program is a compact, three-hour introduction to skills that once powered neighborhoods and markets. Admission is free, and the event accepts up to 130 guests at a time, making it an accessible way to experience living history without a large time commitment or fee. Families will appreciate the pace: activities are self-guided with staffed stations where children try simple projects, while teens and adults can linger at demonstrations. For visitors planning a full day, the meeting point at 323 E. Broughton Street places you within walking distance of downtown shops and riverfront trails. Expect a mix of standing and seated activities; comfortable shoes and a light jacket are sensible for spring or fall when breezes off the river appear. Practical details: Historic Trades Family Day runs for roughly three hours, is FREE to attend, and includes admission to Family Day activities. It’s well suited to mixed-age groups and to anyone interested in craft revival, maker culture, or municipal history. As a local feature, this event complements Savannah's broader outdoor offerings—pair it with a walking tour of the historic district or an evening on River Street for a full-day experience. Whether you come to try embroidery, learn the rhythm of a lathe, or simply listen to period music while watching artisans work, the day offers a tactile, human-scale counterpoint to the city’s architectural pageantry. Bring a notebook, a camera with silent shutter, water bottle, and small cash for vendor crafts; arrive early to beat crowds and secure a hands-on station and memories.
