The trip is a 2-hour sail aboard the historic Ernestina-Morrissey. You will learn about the history of this original wooden vessel from her launch in 1894 as a Grand Banks fishing vessel. She later served as an Artic explorer, then a Cape Verdean packet, and, now, a training vessel for Mass Maritime Academy cadets.
You may help the cadets with raising and lowering sails and, perhaps, steering the ship. Or you may wish to sit back, relax to the motion of the ship, and enjoy the ride as the wind powers Ernestina-Morrissey while the passing scenery soothes and inspires.
This is a fund raiser. All net proceeds go to the Sail Portsmouth Sea Challenge Scholarship Fund to support deserving high school youth who participate in experiential/adventure learning programs at sea on tall ships. Sail Portsmouth is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with no paid staff.
Book your two-hour sail in advance to secure your spot on the historic Ernestina-Morrissey, especially on weekends and summer holidays.
Coastal winds can be chilly even in summer; bring windproof and warm layers to stay comfortable on deck.
Waterproof cases are recommended to protect your gear while capturing stunning ocean views and the schooner’s classic rigging.
Arriving 15 minutes before departure allows time for check-in and to familiarize yourself with the vessel.
The Ernestina-Morrissey has served as a Portuguese fishing vessel, Coast Guard patrol boat, and now a historic sail training ship, linking New England’s maritime heritage.
The crew promotes Leave No Trace principles during sails to protect local marine ecosystems and minimize plastic waste.
Protects against cool sea breezes while sailing.
