You start before dawn, the jungle breathing cool mist as headlamps cut through dark leaves. The trail climbs quickly—rooted steps and slick clay—until the canopy thins and the ridge opens. From the summit of Pico de la Pava the land tilts outward: a patchwork of Veracruz lowlands, the folded ridges of Chiapas, and the green plates of Tabasco. The Malpaso Dam glints far below, a human line against a wild river.
challenging.
10–13 hours.
Good aerobic fitness and experience with sustained uphill hiking; able to handle steep, uneven terrain for several hours.
The trail is about 5 km one-way with roughly 850 meters of elevation gain; expect approximately 5 hours of walking and a full-day outing including transport and lunch.
Certified local guides lead the trip and handle route-finding; the trail can be faint in places and guides also provide cultural context and safety.
This hike requires moderate to strong cardiovascular fitness and is not recommended for very young children, pregnant travelers, or those with serious heart or mobility conditions.
The day ends with a traditional Sierra de Tabasco meal prepared by the community—local staples and dishes that showcase regional ingredients and cooking styles.
The Sierra de Tabasco has long been a resource area for nearby indigenous and rural communities; trails often follow older footpaths used for seasonal harvesting and trade.
Visitors are encouraged to follow leave-no-trace principles; supporting community-run tours helps fund local stewardship and reduces outside development pressure on the forest.
Jungla Experience operates guided outdoor trips and adventures with an emphasis on safety, stewardship, and memorable experiences.
