A cool wind greets you as the minivan leaves Bishkek and the Chuy Valley opens into serrated ridgelines. By the time the road drops you at Kegety Gorge the mountains are close enough to throw shade; the trail climbs steadily, pushing you into thinner air and brighter colors until Kol Tor’s turquoise bowl appears at 2,700 meters.
