Participants should have a moderate level of fitness, able to climb multiple flights of uneven steps and walk short coastal trails.
Climb the 241 steps to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, walk Mundaka’s estuary and stand beneath the historic Gernika oak—all in a single day from Bilbao. This guided tour blends coastal geology, Basque culture and wartime memory with local transport and a regional lunch.
The ascent begins with the ocean at your back, the Cantabrian Sea throwing white foam against a stone stairway that winds like a spine toward a tiny hermitage. Walkers in the group fall into a steady rhythm—step, breathe, step—each of the 241 stone steps a small act of commitment as wind tugs at jackets and gulls wheel overhead. Atop San Juan de Gaztelugatxe the chapel sits squat and stubborn, bells worn smooth by salt and pilgrimage; the view down the isthmus unfurls in hard blues and rocky folds.

Stairs to Gaztelugatxe are steep and can be slick from sea spray—trail or approach shoes with good soles are recommended.
Coastal conditions change quickly; pack a light windproof shell and sun protection even on cloudy days.
The hike is moderate and exposed; carry at least 1–1.5L of water per person, more in warm weather.
Arrive early to avoid crowds at the hermitage and to catch low-angle light on the cliffs.
Gernika is the symbolic heart of Basque self-government; the oak and Assembly House have been central to regional rights for centuries and the town’s 1937 bombing influenced international perceptions of the Spanish Civil War.
Gaztelugatxe and Mundaka lie within coastal and estuarine systems sensitive to visitor pressure; stick to marked paths, avoid trampling marsh vegetation and follow local guidance to protect breeding birds.
Provide traction on wet stone steps and uneven coastal paths.
Protection against wind-driven spray and sudden showers.
