At first light the road drops off the Nairobi plateau and the Rift Valley spreads beneath the bus windows like an open workbook of ridges and lakes. By the time participants step out at Mt Longonot National Park the air has a clean, volcanic edge; grassland rolls up to the foot of a steep, bowl-shaped volcano that dares you to climb to its rim.
