Morning light slices across the Ariège foothills as the van climbs toward the flat-topped pog that holds Château de Montségur. Wind pulls at shirts and the scrubby garrigue seems to dare you upward; the trail is honest—rocky pitches, open sky, and a summit that rewards effort with long views back toward the Pyrenees.

Good cardiovascular fitness and comfort with 1–2 hour uphill hiking on uneven terrain; able to walk several kilometers over a day.
The guided approach is roughly a 1–1.5 hour round hike from the parking area with several steep sections and rocky footing.
The tour requires good mobility; children who can manage a steady uphill walk and adults without serious back or heart conditions can participate, but it’s not recommended for those with limited mobility.
Admission for the Montségur site is included for the hike and interpretive visit as part of the itinerary.
The guide can lend up to four walking sticks for the ascent—tell the operator in advance if you need one.
Montségur was a last refuge for Cathars in the 13th century and the site of a siege that ended in 1244; nearby villages grew around medieval markets and Benedictine foundations.
The karst scrub and thin soils are susceptible to erosion—stay on marked trails, avoid picking wildflowers, and follow local guidance to protect archaeological features.
