A damp morning light slides through firs as the guide leads a small group onto an unmarked forest road above Zărnești. The air tastes of loam and resin; ridgelines of Piatra Craiului and the surrounding Southern Carpathians rise like layered plates into the sky. Cameras click as meadows open to long views across Burzenland — a patchwork of villages, folded peaks and weathered sheep fences.

Burzenland is an ethnographic crossroads where Romanian, Saxon (German) and Hungarian communities shaped villages, fortified churches and pastoral land use over centuries.
Piatra Craiului and adjacent ranges are sensitive karst ecosystems; stick to established routes, pack out waste and avoid disturbing wintering wildlife tracks.
